Customize your Windows Apperance

There are several tools that allow you to adjust color in Windows 10-11. Here is a relatively new, portable application called WinPaletter that takes care of not only colors, but also login and lock screen.

The main window has settings for light/dark style, as well as the color of the taskbar, start menu and programs. After making changes, you can click the Refresh button and see the changes in the preview. Only when you click the Apply button at the bottom will the settings be applied and explorer.exe will be restarted.

Note that this little tool also offers settings for "legacy" Win32 type programs that are otherwise stored in the registry under "HKEY_CURRENT_USERControl PanelDesktopColors". In this case, you do not need to enter RGB values, but you can select specific colors. Another choice is LoginUI. Here you can set the login background color and the background image itself. You can also disable the lock screen and blurry login screen.

You can also edit and save your settings. This means that no one is stopping you from saving different themes and using them as needed. WinPaletter is still in its early stages of development. We will watch, I hope the author will not abandon the tool and will listen to all the opinions of his users.

  • Windows 7 has a classic theme, so it is can be modified without using external tools to enable classic theme

  • If you don't use a classic theme (Windows 11\10\8.1), this will be applicable for some Windows Elements like Dialogs backcolor, labels forecolor and hilights only (i.e. not all Windows elements will be colored like buttons, progressbar and tabpages as they are handled/managed by Visual Styles, not Windows Registry Colors).
